Colourful resin tokens are used to represent the Chemicals used in Synthesis.

Chemical Traits

Hexagonal Shape

Usable chemicals are represented by hexagonal resin tokens.

Chemical Lines

Each type of chemical has a unique pattern of lines on it. By connecting different chemical tokens up, these lines will match the end result required in the Synthesis plans.

Colour

White chemicals are benign and safe to handle.

Colourful chemicals each have a corresponding effect, matching the Hazard Calls. This affects anyone physically touching the token without suitable Equipment (such as Chemical Gloves). This can be countered by storing the chemical in a bag or bottle.

Translucency

Translucent chemicals can be used in a unique way. If you are making a multi-layered synthesis puzzle, you can see the lines on the chemical pieces below them, allowing you to overlay them to piece together a more complex shape.

Most chemicals are opaque. You can overlay them, but they will block the chemical lines underneath, removing those lines from the final synthesis result.

Storage

All chemicals should be physically stored in some kind of container when not in use. You must write a label for hazardous chemicals stating the Hazard and that it will affect anyone physically touching the token inside.

Obtaining Chemicals

Many commonly used chemicals are freely available for any Ardent crewmate to use, provided by the Kenolab. Less common chemicals will need to be purchased from traders or sourced from planets you visit.

Kenolab Supply

The Ardent provides a number of basic chemicals for use on missions. These are freely available to anyone on the ship, in a comparable way to Mattock’s supply of basic ammunition for all combatants (even though OC you are expected to provide most of your own darts, IC it is provided by the ship).

Kenolab’s supplies are tracked and will dwindle. If too many chemicals are withdrawn, Work Orders will be released to resupply the ship’s stock. As the Ardent continues deeper into the galaxy it will become increasingly important to use these resources carefully.

Individuals withdrawing large amounts of chemicals may be subject to investigation for proper usage. Those acting for personal gain, against the interest of the ship, will face consequences.

Chemical Samples

Undiscovered or unusable chemicals are represented by a test tube filled with liquid accompanied by a purple lammie or a code. These are a type of Sample and follow Sample Research rules. Once the experiment is complete you will be rewarded with a usable Chemical token.

If the test tube only has a code written on it and there is no lammie, reference that code to the Kenolab or see if there’s a box with a matching code on it.

Creating Chemicals

All new chemical creation is through plot-supplied Samples. It is not currently possible to experiment to create new chemicals outside of this.

Chemical List

White Chemicals

Common chemicals, the basis of most chemical puzzles.

These chemicals are readily available in the Kenolab.

Your characters will be aware of many more chemicals existing in the Ardent’s stockpile, but we will be introducing them slowly to ensure each has a use in puzzles before distribution. This will mean that over time there will be more difficult puzzles available.

Specialist Chemicals

These chemicals are less common and are not freely available from the Kenolab; you will need to source them yourself.

Discovered Chemicals

As more chemicals are discovered in game, they will be added here. These are not available for purchase from the main Ardent shop and must be obtained in-game through traders or the environment.

Unnamed chemicals from research projects will require naming by those who discovered them.
